Understanding Restoration Dentistry

Restoration dentistry is a branch of dentistry that involves the prevention & treatment of diseases of the teeth so as to give them back to their optimum health. It can also include the repair/replacement of defective or damaged teeth such as decayed, broken or chipped ones. An increasingly popular field, restorative dentistry involves several procedures, with each suitable for a particular situation or patient. Dentists Mississauga can offer you the following types of restoration procedures like dentures, bridges, implants and so on.

This educational video explains several options for restoring your teeth.

Types of Restoration Dentistry Procedures

1. Dental Implants

These are artificial, replacement tooth roots which are made of titanium and provide support for fixed or removable replacement teeth. They are placed into the jawbone to replace the natural root and work to hold the new tooth in place. Dental implants can be used to replace missing teeth and provide a foundation for dentures among others.

2. Dentures

Typically made of resin, they are removable replacements for missing teeth & surrounding tissues. They can be combined with certain metal attachments and help improve chewing and biting as well as preventing sagging facial appearance . In general, there are two types of dentures available: complete ones which replace all the teeth and partial dentures where the natural teeth remain but are retained by clasps.

3. Dental Crowns

Crowns are considered ideal for correcting decayed, poorly shaped, chipped or broken teeth. Also known as caps, they are often made or acrylic or porcelain and can be designed per the patient’s tooth size. Crowns are also used to cover spaces in between the teeth.

4. Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are custom devices anchored to surrounding teeth that replace the missing teeth. A tooth replaced with bridgework is replaced by a natural-looking prosthetic that’s held in place by the teeth neighboring the missing ones.  This procedure is commonly made from high quality materials like porcelain, precious metals, or a combination of these two. Dentists Mississauga take into account things like tissue compatibility, esthetics and function when picking the material suitable for a patient’s teeth.

5. Mini Dental Implants

Mini dental implants, also called denture-retention implants, are small, titanium-made posts that are used to stabilize and provide a secure fit for dentures. The system comprises miniature titanium implants that work just like the root of a natural tooth and a retaining fixture that’s attached to the base of a denture. The fixture snaps over the ball-shaped head of the implant and does securely hold the denture in place.

6. Teeth fillings

These are made using some of the most advancements in the field of dentistry. Fillings are composites of hard plastic that fuses to the tooth, ultimately holding the broken or chipped tooth together. They allow the tooth in question to get back to its original strength in a conservative fashion.

Fillings were initially made by use of amalgam, which contains mercury and may have uncertain effects on the whole body when released by the fillings. Additionally, some dentists believe that these fillings would expand & contract with hot, cold or even biting. Some also believe that amalgam technology may lead teeth to become weak with each meal and remain susceptible to fracturing.
